Wednesday 31st July Fly Fishing session on Chew

I have had the week off work just to chill and catch up with a few odd jobs but always planned to have a mid week fishing session. I was planning to go on the River Kenn but looking at the weather forecast and with little cover I thought I may have got drenched so a day session on Chew it was to be. I got to Woodford Lodge about 10:30 and there were plently of boats available, it would have been almost impossible to fish from the bank given the wind. Paid my £36.50 which includes fishing ticket and 8 fish, no catch and release at the moment due to the warm conditions, fair enough. The advice I was given was to fish deep so I set up a 15 foot leader with 2 diawl bachs (1 red, 1 green) and a gold head black buzzer on the point. Boat No. 32 was loaded and off I went, not that many out on the water today so loads of room across 1200 acres!I decided to stay close to the Lodge bank and just worked my way up and down drifting in the wind and windy it was at times.

on the high seas looking towards the Lodge and Sailing Club.

After about 30 mins I felt my set up was not right, I had spotted a few fish rising so swapped the point fly to an orange booby to fish washing line style and up in the water. What a good move that was, within 10 mins I had my first fish, fishing was difficult with a massive strong tow, nearly fell out of the boat once while standing up controlling the line. Another hour passed and I caught another up near the dam wall and missed a few pulls, then it went quite. Back down the lake and below the Lodge I just kept drifting in and then went back out about 500 yds and kept going over the same ground. By 5 p.m. I had my limit, 8 fish for 16lb 8oz, nice eating. Here they are......

I called into a friend on the way home and gave him 2, had one for tea myself and the rest are in the freezer.
Booked into the Chippenham Saturday Open on the upper Bristol Avon, probably be a roach and small chub match.

Sunday 28th July Open Match Bristol Avon

I was in two minds what to do this weekend and started searching around for Matches, when I saw that there was an Open Match on the Bristol Avon I was immediately drawn to it so gave Kevin Dicks a call on the Friday and booked in. Draw was at 10:00 at the Stoddard and Pitt Rugby Club on the A4 between Bristol and Bath with fishing 12:00 - 17:00. I guess the last time I fished this stretch was approx 10 years ago or more but I have been keen to get back fishing more natural venues so was looking forward to it. I done a little bit of research by looking at various blogs and old match reports and would also draw on past experience even though it was a bit dated. A phone call to Cadbury Angling http://www.cadburyangling.co.uk/ even though a little late secured me 2 pints of caster, I had plently of red worm in my wormery and a few kilo's of Noire and Green Swim Stime plus plently of brown crumb to help bulk it out a pint of red maggot and some hemp was also picked up when I called in on the Saturday to collect the caster. Sunday came and I was up early as if it was an ealier draw which gave me plent of time to get the worms nice and fresh and load up the car. I got to the Rugby Club about 09:15 and met up with Derek Coles from Frys a short while later James Gunter from Clevedon arrived who is also part of the new Maver Cadbury Angling Super League squad, James also won on Durleigh the week before and was here to practice for the last 2 Super League matches in August. Other Super League Teams had the same idea and I was soon in the company of Sensa Thyers, Preston Thatchers, Diawa Gordon League to name but a few, I also saw Richard Chave, another great natural venue angler. Not quite sure of the final number but there were around 35 plus anglers. A mug of tea and a bacon role for £2(bargain) passed the time while waiting for the draw. Kevin called the draw and explained the access points, only two, one was a walk from the Rugby Club for permanent pegs 101 - 61 and 1 - 60 from Newbridge. I was about the 15th to draw and pulled out 76 which was around the old railway bridge area, I was quite happy with this as I had come across a few reports about this area when doing my research.
So it was just a case of moving the car to the other end of the ruhby field, load up and then go for it, a 26 peg walk did not sound that far but it is on a river. I eventually got to my peg passing Derek Coles on 82, when I told him where I was he also said he fancied it. When I got there the bank was quite high and a tree did make casting awkward so I decided to get down in the water which came halfway up my waders, my trolley platform acted as a table for bait etc. Simple today, a wag for close in at about 3 meters and a feeder for halfway to two thirds across. I had not mixed up anygroundbait so set about this first, I made up approx 3.5 kilo's.

I was ready in plent of time for the all in. When the match started I put 6 big feeder fulls in two thirds across and a couple of tennis balls in on the wag line which I didn't take a look at all match. 2nd proper cast on the feeder line with mag and worm on a size 16 drennan super specialist I snared a small perch a few more followed in the first hour along with a chublet. It was about 90 mins in when the 3oz tip went around, I struck and nothing there, bait was in tact. Out again and the smae thing happened so cast a little sorter (not much) and it done it again, I struck and I knew it was a bream but alas it came off halfway. 15 mins passed and I finally got one, another 20 mins passed before I had another. I was casting out about every 5 mins at this stage. From about 2 hours in I caught one every so often and at just before 16:00 I had about 15 good bream, it was fantastic catching them on a deep flowing river. Bank walkers suggested I was on to win with only one angler in the 60's with 4 bream. Then some idiots on the cycle patch decided to jump into the river from the old railway bridge, I said nothing hoping they would go away, they did after about 20 mins and at least I had 2 pegs between them. I took one more bream in that last hour. At the weigh in I had 17 bream between 5lbs and 2lbs for 61lb 09ozs enough for a win and £140. I did not get any pics as it took 4 weighs on the small scales and it was hot so wanted to get them back in the water. Not sure who it was that came 2nd but they weighed 35lb odd and after that the weights dropped away however you needed around 10lb for a section. What a great day and a personal best for me on a river in England. Tuesday 30th Just got these results from Anglers Mail (almost accurate) Bathampton AA, Bristol Avon, Newbridge. Sun, 35. Ivan Curry (Clevedon AA) 61-9-0, 14 bream, feeder, worm and maggot, peg 76; Steve Ford (Daiwa Gordon League/Old Ghost) 36-7-0; Darren Gilman (Maver Bathampton) 14-8-0; Neil Richards (Daiwa Gordon League) 14-4-0; Paul Bick (Shakespeare Superteam) 11-4-0; Lee Trivett (Preston Innovations Thatchers) 10-8-0.

Sunday 21st July - Clevedon v Frys Durleigh Res

I had intended to fish this match but due to a heavy week at work plus having to go in on Saturday left me totally knackered and I needed some sleep.

When Adie Baker sent a text showing the results I regretted not going but another surprise came when he informed me the top weight was made up of bream and the other 6 top weights consisted of roach!!!

Clevedon angler (and a person who loves fishing for silvers on natural venues) James Gunter was drawn on the far bank on peg 5 caught steady throughout the match on the tip for a match winning 58lb 4oz of bream.

James Gunter

In second place was Fry's stalwart Merv Sivell who was on peg 5 with 52lb 4oz of roach on the whip.

Merv Sivell

The chasing pack all weighed in as follows.....

3rd peg 19 - Warren Bates Frys 44lb 12oz (roach)
4th peg 16 - Derrick Coles Frys 42lb 7oz (roach)
5th peg 15 - Paul Faires Clevedon 39lb (roach)
6th peg 6 - Rob Fogg Clevedon 37lb 2oz (roach)
7th peg 4 - Ray Cooper Frys 35lb (roach)

What a match.

Sunday 14th July - Apex Lake

Having probs with blog hence late post.... hope this works.

There was a Clevedon Club Match on the Top Lake at Acorn Fisheries on Saturday (part of the Saturday Series), I had not fished any of the previous ones so did not bother, I tend to do a lot of running around on Saturdays in order to free time up to fish on a Sunday. John Wolstencroft (who has been mentioned many times on my blog) sent me a text during the week asking if I fancied meeting up down at Apex Lake. I was thinking of the middle or lower Bristol Avon but thought that'll do as it is one of my favourite lakes (not a commercial). I rolled into the car park just before 7:45 as arranged, John was already there and more or less loaded up. Colourful as ever he proceeded to tell me about a Magistrates dog breaking his number 6 section down Viaduct last week and I gather Steve Long had to intervene before the Magistrate went for a swim, We decided to fish the early pegs adjacent to Apex Drive, the wind would be in our face and little or no trouble from dog walkers, kids, cycles etc. So Barrow load up and off we go, not, my wheel had a flat. John took my pole holdall and I forced the rest around to the pegs taking a breather every so often. I went and got the car after getting to the peg. Pegs 1, 2 and 3 were vacant so I plumbed for 2 and John settled in on 3. There was only a light wind and temeratures were around 20c, lot of fish topping and the odd swirl from carp, I would not be bothering with them though and set up 2 top 3's which were identical except for the float tip clour, one red and one yellow/greenish. Depth the same at 13m and 14m right and left of me, nice and easy.0.13 mainline and 0.10 hooklength to a 18 Drennan Silver Fish. Bait was caster, maggot, hemp and 6mm soft pellet, GB was 50% Noire and 50% Fishmeal.

Before fishing John had 2 mishaps, reel spool went in the water and despite dredging with his landing net only found a cash box with something rattling inside and a fe plastic bags but more about this later. He then dropped his flask and smashed it, second one in 2 weeks!!!
So eventually we were fishing, I was going all out for silvers and John was to do the same but have a lok for carp later on in the day. After 2 hours we both had fish but nothing of any size, I was catching long and John much shorter, it was a mix of small skimmers and roach. In the 3rd hour we both bumped better fish (bream), I finally got one about 2lb on double soft pellet but no more followed until I fished worm and a better fish of around 3lb was had. Chopping and changing brought more fish at intervals but they were not getting their heads down.

Here is John concentrating down the edge on 10mm meat, he caught a roach on it, not sure if he had enough bait here!

We both had action most of the day and it was great to keep it simple and tradional, John ended up with 4kg 10 and I had 6kg 20, here are the pics of our catch.

As for the spool retrieval well, John did strip off, here he is getting ready to dive, I know he is fond of ducks but getting this close maybe a step too far, what a body.

Here he is almost underwater, he took several dives and did manage to get his spool back, well done mate, plus a pair of sun glasses, a bolt rig and more plastic bags, oh and I think there is some evidence of webbing between those toes, lol, good luck at Shackles next week John. What a great day.
