Sunday 28th October - UTWL, Bristol Avon Melksham and Chippenham

First of all I would like to wish (as do a lot of other anglers) Simon Hebditch all the best in his knew job. Simon has left M5 Angling after 20 years and to say he has served the angling community in the S.W. superbly is a gross understatement and I am sure M5 will miss him as will his customers.

Not a bad angler either so he will still be around on the bank

Back to Melksham and Chippenham again to fish the same sections as last week for Round 3. I said to Mike Martin-Davis before the draw ''short walk again for me please''. When he came back as a team we had the same pegs as the previous week but I was on exactly the same peg G6, all the rest were shuffled around. So generally not a great draw but we knew the details of each peg, especially me!

Most of you will be aware the temperature dipped by 10 degrees week on week and there was also a very cold NE wind so fishing would definitely be affected.

I was soon parked up at the bottom of Portman Rd and handballed my gear in 3 trips across the football pitch to the peg. DGL Phil Bendall was also in my section as he was the previous week but on a different peg.

My rigs were more or less the same as last week and just a small adjustment to the depths here and there. I also set up a bread rig to fish at 7 metres in case it was very hard. The wind was a real tough downstreamer so I lengthened the amount of line between the dracon and the float to combat this at 13 metres.
The sun was out and the temperature went up a bit before the all in so I mixed up some soil, black lake and noire laced with worm, live pinkie and caster. On the whistle at 10:30 I cupped in 6 medium sized balls at 13 metres and didn't feed anywhere else to see how it went.

Starting off on the caster I had about 6 runs through and not a sign which did surprise me. I put on a maggot and the float slide away as soon as it settled and I had a net roach. During the first hour I had 20 fish of various sizes (all roach) and kept swapping hook baits.....single fluro pinkie, double fluro pinkie, worm head and maggot, still not a bite on caster.

I then started to loose feed the 7 metre line with maggot and put another ball in at 13 metres. I could only see the angler on peg 7 and had been keeping an eye on him as this is where Phil Bendall was the previous week and had 8lb odd for a 2nd in section. I did not see that much activity down there.

A guy came walking up an asked how I was getting on, I told him about 1.5 lbs or so. He said most were struggling especially the two end pegs (7 & 8). As they were the two best pegs the week before I thought I had a chance.

Going into the second hour I had a perch over the ground bait so shipped out a 2 gram rig to hold back hard with a lobby tail on a 16. No sign of life at all after 15 minutes so I decided not to waste anymore time and just try to put anything at all in the net.  Last week I caught towards the end of the run but not this week, it was right on top of the feed or nothing.  I had a reasonable next hour and a half if you call catching about another 15 fish. Coming in on the 7 metre line the fish were very small but given the conditions I was happy catching them.

By the time the ''all out'' was called I thought I had around 5lb more or less the same as the previous week.

I had the board and the guy with the scales came down looking for me, he was on peg 2 and said they had struggled big time above me .... heard that before.

Turned out it was quite a tight section and I did OK earning 7 points from 8.

I was back at Spencers Club quite early and team mate Mike Withey was already there. Mike had 7 points as well and he said Rich had also done quite well but the rest of the team missed out on mid table points or more by ounces to a pound in some really tight sections on a difficult day.

Mike and I picked up 2nd in section cash so not all bad.

Winner on the day was Pete Phillips with a superb 46lb 11oz of bream and roach from the Golf

Pete with part of his catch

Course in Chippenham which included 12 bream al caught on the pole.
Second was Nick McCartney with 21lb odd of chub from the Sea Cadets peg (Chippenham)
Third Martin Barrett with 14lb 4oz (chub at Chippenham)

Teams on the day...

1st   DGL 47 points
2nd  PI Thatchers 43 points
3rd   Sensas Lobbys 39 points
4th   GBV / Wyvern Anglers 36 points
6th   Devizes / Sensas Nomads 30 points

Needless to say we are bottom of the league but with the last 3 rounds on the canal anything can happen.

I am out again Wednesday fishing the first round of the Avon League at Bradford on Avon then back on the Lower Avon on Sunday in the Commercial House League.

Not too sure whether to continue with the blog as Facebook appears to be taking over, I'll have a think about it.

Tuesday 23 October 2018

Saturday 20th October, Canal Pairs Final & Sunday 21st October Upper Thames Winter League

Canal Pairs Final, Staffs Worcester and Trent and Mersey Canal Stafford.

My angling pal Chris Hook and I qualified for this final on the Gloucester Canal at the start of the summer. After qualifying we started to do some research on the two canals around Stafford which were to be used for the final. There was some information but it was fairly limited so reached out to the Stafford Izaak Walton Club via Facebook and was put in contact with Alan Round their Match Secretary who gave us some basic info. I then made contact with Simon Neckless who is fairy local to the venue and gave me his number to have a chat about the stretches being used. All this information was really useful and we felt a lot more confident.
We did think about travelling up on the Friday night but in the end chose to have an early start on the Saturday. I met Chris at Gordano Services on the M5 at 05:15 for the planned 2hr and 15min drive. The fog was quite bad in places but luckily at that time of the morning the M5 and M6 was quiet. Just before Birmingham I had an engine management warning light come on and on the dashboard display it said ''risk of filter clogging''. It was an amber light and it only said risk so I carried on and caught up with Chris at the Stafford Boat Club by 07:30 which was where the draw was.  I decided to phone the RAC after the match. The Boat Club was not open so we had to wait for someone to turn up, they did around 07:45 so no breakfast as planned, I did manage to get a couple of cuppa's and that was it.
I would be on A Section which was the Staffs Worcester and Chris on B Section the Trent and Mersey. 55 Pairs would be competing.
As we had not seen the venues before our peg numbers didn't mean a lot. I drew A33 which I could walk to from the draw and Chris had B 47 which he needed to drive to but all the parking was well organised with postcodes.

Our research had told us there were some big perch in the two canals so we went with plenty of worm including lobby along with squats, pinkies, caster and maggot. Our ground bait mix was to be Sensas Noire Fine Canal and Black Lake.

As I walked down the Staffs Worcester to my peg I passed a couple of anglers who had draw on the mouth of the only marina and it did look nice. To be fair as I walked down all the pegs looked good with overhanging trees and bushes and there was plenty of space between. I was keeping an eye on the peg numbers and looking ahead of me when I saw a very narrow part of the canal and I mean narrow. My peg was right in the middle of the narrowest bit.

The peg was no more than 8 metres wide but I did know from research that it could possibly produce in the right conditions.
I took time to study the far bank and picked out 3 areas to concentrate on after plumbing up. At 10:00 o'clock, 12:00 o'clock and 14:00  tight to the reeds I had about 3 foot of water. I set up a 0.3 gram float with 0.10 hook length to a forged 20, elastic was a number 6. A similar rig but heavier for the same lines, 0.14 hook length to a forged 18 and a 12 elastic. Down the track rig was a 4x14 to a 0.08 hook length and a 22 hook, elastic was a number 4. I set up another duplicate rig for the track but again much heavier, 0.14 hook length to a 16, elastic was a 12.

We had loads of time to set up as the match was 11 until 4. As I was setting up I heard a familiar accent behind me and I just happened to ask.... ''where are you from then'' the reply was what do you want to know that for....... i replied ''I am originally from Portadown''..... the reply was....... ''your Ivan Currie'' ..... lol, it was Geoff Quinn who loves his canal fishing and has a lot to do with the matches on the Newry Canal which is not far from where I was born.
Geoff was not fishing himself but was over with a couple of his colleagues who had and I believe was support a junior event the following day.

I carried on sorting myself out and was ready in plenty of time. As I was waiting for the all in a boat come through and I could have touched it as my peg was so narrow.
On the hooter I cupped in a little chopped worm and caster plus a few squats on my left and right far bank lines and ground bait and squat straight in front of me. Two balls went in down the track with squat and a few caster.
I started of across right in front of me with a fluro pinkie on the light rig just to have a look to see if anything was there. It didn't take long for the float to dip and I soon had a micro roach. A few more followed and believe me they were not big. I persevered with double squat as a change of bait firing squat over the top for about 20 minutes but the fish did not increase in size. Before I tried my other far bank lines I went across on the heaver rig with a small red worm. Bang...straight away the float disappeared and a perch of around 4 ozs was swung in. I had seen the angler to my left fishing quite a big piece of worm and he had netted a decent perch as well. I had a look on my 10:00 o'clock line with half a dendra tight to the reeds on the heavy rig and had to wait about 10 minutes for an indication, the float was heading into the reeds so I struck hard and the elastic came out quite a way. It was a decent perch of around a pound, just the job. I re-fed that line with a little more choppy and went on to my 14:00 line. Same thing happened almost immediately and another decent perch was played to the net. Looking up and down I could not see that much action so felt I was doing ok. I did try the track but did not have a bite on anything, think it was because the peg was too narrow. I nicked a few more micro perch and roach across directly opposite me as I wanted to rest the other lines.
About halfway through the sun came around quite strong and the canal started to switch off. at this point I decided to sit it out positively so fed a fair bit of worm along my 3 lines across and a pot down the middle. I was rewarded with a near 2lb perch on a quarter of a lobby and lost another good fish about an hour from the end. I did loose another big perch halfway across the canal due to having to stop shipping back as there were pedestrians in the way, pissed me off.

The scales came up and it was clear most had struggled for around a kilo. My mainly perch net went 2kg 100grms and was really up there in the section.

My net and picture taken by non other than Tom Scholey of ''catch more media''

Heres how my section board looked like....

I phone Chris after I weighed and he had also done well with over 4kg and was up there in his section. He also had lost a big fish.

We met up back at the boat club and calculated we might be in with a chance. The Top 4 pairs were being paid with the winners receiving over £2000 down to £750 for 4th place.

We finished 5th!!!!! those fish we lost each cost us big time.

Here are the full results........

With regards to my van..... phone the RAC who said it was safe to drive home and I did make it. Now in local garage. Didn't get home until 21:30....knackered but great experience and only just missed out.

Upper Thames Winter League Bristol Avon Chippenham and Melksham - summary

Up early again as I had to transfer my gear from the sick van to the car and it was an hours drive to Melksham. To be honest I didn't feel great due to lack of sleep.
I did get a short drive and walk to my peg though, G6 at Melksham down the Portman Rd.
The peg did look nice and I was surprised I needed a top 4 rig.

My Nomads Team mates said it could be ok for a few skimmers. I won't go into all the rigs etc but I ended up doing ok with 5lb 2oz worth 5 points from 8. Made up of nice stamp roach but couldn't keep them coming.

Team wise we had a disaster on a very dire river with no flow.

There were a few double figure weights with Nigel Baker having an outstanding 30lb weight of mainly bream from Monkton Pk in Chippenham.

Back on the same venue next week. Lets hope it fishes a bit better but no rain is forecast.

Sunday 14th October - Sensas Bristol Commercial House Round 3, Bristol Avon Newbridge

We had a squad meeting a couple of weeks ago to discuss tactics for this match. Team manager Mike Martin-Davies handed out a few riddles as prizes for recent section winners, Chris said he had enough riddles but could do with a new stink bag. Mikes reply was you can have one but you got to win 2 sections.

I met up with Sam and Chris in McDonalds on the Bath Rd. Chris was a little late due to a busy Saturday which also involved some consumption of alcohol! He wasn't quite with it so to speak.

The draw was at the Crown in Keynsham but parking was a bit of a problem as the Rugby Club opposite had an event on so we could use their facility and most other roads are double yellowed.

Team today was...
Chris Hook (c)
Sam Johnson
Leigh Wakefield
Rich Whitmarsh
Geraint (aka keep Britain tidy) Powell
Me

We also had another team in B Div.

We had a fair bit of rain leading up to the match but reports after observations on the Saturday morning it had made very little difference to the river.
We were fairly well down in the draw and with fishing 10:00 - 15:00 it would be a bit of a challenge to get set up on time as there were a few long walks........guess what...yep, I got the longest feckin walk again.....Mike Martin-Davies....please send me a grievance form to complete!!!!

We drew Peg 1.
Chris was on A and was delighted with it being on permanent peg 3.
Sam had the shortest walk (i.e. nil as he parked behind his peg on B section permanent peg 20 before the pump house.
Leigh was in C Section partway down the straight around peg 36.
I was in D permanent peg 54
Rich in E somewhere around the old railway bridge.
Geraint in the trees in F.

The river was very clear but there was a bit more flow. I was sat well up from the river but at least it was a safe bank and my 4 metre net reached the water comfortably. The rain was still coming down as it had done for quite a few hours and was not due to stop until about 14:00.
I had a trolley but left it in the van due to having the long walk and did not need the extra weight.

Plumbing up with a 2 gram bodied float I found it was just under match top 4 deep at 13 metres which was were the flow was. It ran though nice but I thought the river might come up a bit and also set up a 4 gram Flat Float for the same line. A waggler and feeder rod came out of the ready rod bag.
Ground bait today was Sensas River and Gros Gardon plus soil for balling in and some brown crumb added instead of soil for the feeder mix.

I was just about ready for the all in and had 8 balls ready to feed laced with a little worm, dead pinkie, hemp and caster.
First trot down with an exploratory maggot the float buried and a roach of about 3 oz was swung in. Next run though a skimmer of around 8 oz which I netted. I switched to caster and soon was swinging in dumpy roach, beautiful fish and started to get my act together loose feeding hemp and caster over the top. Usually the pole line dies at Newbridge after 45 mins to an hour but I was surprised that after 90 minutes I was still catching although it did slow. I soon realised the pike had moved in as I had one on for a short while and then saw a few following fish in. The line died completely just after the second hour. The river had not come up nor had it coloured up any but I decided to give the flat float a try with a worm and dead red. After 20 minutes I did not have a bite so had a look on the feeder. I did have a couple of rattles but nothing positive so gave up on that and came back on the 2 gram rig. I did have a couple more smaller roach so put in a few more balls and left it. Out on the waggler was a fair distance and I couldn't loose feed all the way across to the tree line but I could get the float there. I noticed a few small fish jumping out of the water so guessed it was chub chasing them.
Double red shallow about 5 foot saw a few bites from barrel chub, they didn't weigh much but at least  I was putting something in the net. It was hard to judge how the match was going as there were no bank walkers and looked like everyone stayed at their pegs which is the way it should be.

I had a call from Chris to ask me how it was going, I told him I had about 5lb but was now struggling. He said he had about 20lb made up of skimmers, roach and a proper bream on the pole. He has drawn that peg a few times and it has got form.
I carried on chopping and changing and on the all out had a 6 oz chublet across on the wag.

The scales came up and Paul Issacs was best with 16lb odd from permanent peg 61 on the norfolk reeds but the rest of the weights were pretty poor ranging from 6oz to 3lb odd. Paul Purchase was below me and he weighed just over 8lb, my net went 6lb 14oz so 3 points from 4 and if Paul Isaacs framed I would get the A Div section money by default. The 2 pegs above me in C section had around 3lb - 4lb each.

Walking back to the van I caught up with Sam and Chris. Sam had 6lb 6oz for last in Section he also told me Leigh had a poor day with 2lb 3oz and last in his Section. Chris had finished with 21lb 4oz and hoped it would be enough to win the day.

Chris with his 21lb 4oz

The Team Sheet was a bit of a mixed bag with Rich also winning his Section.

Our Team sheet

Not a bad day really for Nomads. Chris 1st overall and 3 Section winners across the 2 teams (alough mine was default).

Big day for Chris and I next Saturday as we are fishing the Angling Trust Canal Pairs Final on the Staffs Worc and the Trent and Mersey Canals after winning the qualifier on the Glos Canal back in June. Then on the Sunday I have a Winter League match at Chippenham and Melksham.

Best get on with some prep then...

Sunday 7th October - Upper Thames Winter League Round 1, Upper Thames Radcot / Lechlade

A different league for us this year along with some new venues as well. Its called the UTWL but only has one match on the Thames, the remainder are on the Upper Bristol Avon and middle reaches of the Kennet and Avon Canal.
I have only fished the Thames once before and that was back in early September but I have been keeping an eye on the results and methods used by some of the regulars. Basically its a roach and perch match with perch providing ''the bonus fish'' if your lucky.
I was up and about early, 05:00 and set off to drive the 70 miles across 6 counties to get to the Swan Inn on the river at Radcot. The temperature was 2 degrees and the windscreen had to be scraped for the first time. I arrive about 07:15 well in time for the 08:00 draw.

Team today was....
Mike Martin-Davies (c)
Mark Williams
Rich Whitmarsh
Mike Whithey
Brian Melksham
Steve Saunders
Brian Melksham
Me

My Team Nomads also had 2 Teams out on the Wye for the ABC League, so 24 of us out on the bank today!

The pegs today where from Lechlade to just downstream of Radcot. Mike came back with the draw and I found myself on Radcot Up which I could walk to from the draw. I had F8 which was the end peg just below the Marina mouth.
It didn't take long to get there and I managed not to get killed going over the small humpback bridge on the road then down some steps, through 2 gates (no need to break the kit down either) and across to the river.

On arriving at my peg it was quite narrow compared to the ones upstream of me but a fe fish were topping and some bubbles on the inside line.

All the boats opposite were devoid of life so I hoped they would stay that way.

Thatchers Martin Barrett was above me on the Marina Mouth and was making a few calls to get info on his peg. He came down and said my peg won the Thames Champs (thats fooked it then), he can't half chat.

Plumping up I found the best line was at around 11 to 12 metres without much weed but the depth was a bit uneven. In the end I settled on about 7 foot with a longish line as it was very clear. Shaun Bryan gave me some advice the last time I was up here concerning a couple of rigs so I set up a 2 gram with the olivetti about 2 foot from the hook and a single number 8 below this. A Tubertini 19 to 0.09 was at the business end. I also set up a 1.5 gram with a similar shooting pattern plus 1 gram strung out rig 5 foot deep for the same line. Finally a choppy rig at 5 metres with a 16 hook to 0.11.
Ground bait was 50 / 50 Sensas Noire and Gros Garden.

Due to the clear conditions and the frost I cupped in 6 balls at the start laced with dead pinkie, hemp and caster and a big pot of chopped worm on the inside.

Starting on the 1 gram rig I was getting indications but only from small fish and the maggot came back stretched every time. I persevered with it but after 15 minutes swapped over to the 2 gram rig with double caster. Much better and holding back caught a few stamp roach. Lovely fish and unmarked. I was feeding hemp over the top and they started to respond well. the first hour was pretty good but then started to tail off a little so I put another small ball in and came in on the choppy line.
The float sailed away immediately and a good perch was netted. 4 more smaller ones followed on the bounce and then nothing so refed more worm before going back out down the middle.
The roach had come back and more tidy ones were netted. Double caster was the best bait and also got me a good perch of around a pound but I bumped a few as well. (lesson for next time ....  set up a worm rig for the middle).

Just as I was putting a few fish together a couple arrived in their car on the opposite bank and proceeded to work on the white boat to my left, just where I was catching. They pumped the blidge out 3 times and were walking up and down the outside cleaning and doing maintenance. Needless to say on a bright day and clear river the fish backed off. It was hard going from this point and it wasn't until the last 30 minutes or so that I got them back although I did nick a few more perch from the inside. Given the stamp of fish I was catching before they arrived I am almost sure my with would have been double what I weighed.

I finished up with 8lb 14oz which was worth 4 points from 8

Heres how the Section looked.....

Arriving back at the Pub i met up with the other guys, very mixed results but ......  Mark Williams had a good second half in the match catching 14lb 3oz on the 3.5 metre whip only 2oz off the winning weight.

Mark with his bag. I have digitally enhanced him but can't quite get rid of the ''peaky blinders'' look

Sunday 30th September - Sensas Bristol Commercial House League Round 2, Bristol Avon, Swineford to Chequers

I didn't fish the first round of the league at the beginning of Sept due to being away celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary. I know.....2 life sentences for murder.

40 years ago.... haven't changed much !

Nomads have 2 teams in the league this year, its a bit of a stretch with a lot of other things going on but we will see how it goes and its important to keep the league going although in a few years time we will all be on zimmers.

My old Maver Team make up the most of the 6 anglers in Sensas Nomads Black and we are in A Div. The mainly Wiltshire arm of the squad are Sensas Nomads Green and are in B Div. 4 Teams in each Div.
A poor first round on the KSD saw us lying 4th (bottom) in A Div so we were out to try and recover some ground. It is a tough Div with Thatchers and 2 Bathampton Teams who know the venues very well and have a good range of anglers to call on.

Our Team was...
Chris Hook (c)
Sam Johnson
Leigh Wakefield
Rich Whitmarsh
Geraint Powell
Me

Pegging today was as follows and a bit different to previous years with the introduction of Chequers were you could drive to your peg. Swineford and Jack Whites were reasonable walks with the Crane being a bit of a bas%*$d.

So.... as the oldest in the Team guess where I drew.... yep up the Crane C3 !!!!
I had trouble parking down by the Marina, its getting busier around this area due to the number of boat owners cars and had to do a circle in order to find a space.
A long walk with all the gear and 2 fences later (helped by other guys over the kissing gates, much appreciated) I arrive at my peg and took off the hoody to cool down.

The peg to be fair looked OK but you had to be careful due to overhanging branches.

Andy Britt was on the peg by the fence below me and then quite a bit upstream were the other 2 pegs.

The flow seemed OK at 13 meters, quite good to be honest so I set up a 3 gram and a 2 gram were it was top 4 deep (both rigs had 18's to 0.10 fluro) and a 1 gram rig for down the inside geared up for fishing chopped worm. A Feeder was set up but only used for about 15 mins the whole match. Ground bait was Sensas Dark River, Gros Gardons and Soil.

Fishing today was 10:00 - 15:00 and I was just about ready.

I only put in 4 balls at the start at 13 metres as there are a lot of pike up this end and was planning just to top up as I went.
A good helping of chopped worm went in down the inside in order to try and catch a bonus fish later.
It was quite a nice day with white cloud overhead and a very slight breeze upstream. First run down with the 3 gram and the float buried after a few seconds, nice plump roach of around 4 ozs.  During the first hour it was almost a fish a chuck but as time went on the light became more difficult with the reflection of the white boat on the water and I started bumping fish due o late strikes and not seeing the bite properly. I blackened the tip but didn't make much difference.
After about 2 hours plus Andy came up to see how I was doing, I said about 5lbs and he said he had the same but it was switching off a bit.
I started to get a bit of pike trouble so had a look on the inside. One small perch that was it after 15 minutes so went back out long. The upstream breeze increase and the float just sat there at times not moving very much at all. Put out the lighter rig which helped but it definitely slowed. I did top up with the odd ball and plenty of loose feed over the top which gave me a few more fish.
The inside did not produce anything else and I only had a perch on the tip across.

At the end of the match I thought I had about 8lbs. Andy also said he had about the same. I know the peg was worth more than that and could have down double figures if the light had been better. A running line rig may also have helped but restricted due to the bushes and trees.

I was not far out with my estimate, 7 lbs 11oz.

Heres how the whole Section finished, quite tight.

Generally the river fished very well with loads of roach coming out. Sam got his Section by default and only just out of the money with 16lb plus. Leigh was equal 1st in his Section so 2 pick ups for the Team. We also done enough to get off the bottom so are making progress but there is a big gap to climb.
